Examples of applications for sparingly soluble substances:
Some of the applications for which Metrohm recommends the use of a Polytron are listed below. Numerous other possible applications are also presented in the Metrohm monograph «Water determination by Karl Fischer titration» (Article numbers 8.026.5011: German; 8.026.5013: English), which you can order free of charge from your local Metrohm agency.
Candies:
Although water is not one of the main constituents of candies, its content is a critical factor in their production. The water content determines both the constituency of the candies and also their taste.
Pharmaceuticals:
The water content of a medicament influences the release of its active ingredient. This means that it is an important parameter in pharmaceutical analysis. With the Titrando/Polytron system the tablets can be dissolved in the KF reagent in a very short time irrespective of their coating.
Meat:
Meat usually contains a lot of water which is, however, enclosed in cells. This water can only be released by disrupting the cells with a high-frequency homogenizer.
Dried plant material:
In plant material, such as tobacco, the majority of the water is also enclosed in cells. The easiest way of extracting/releasing it is by using a high-frequency homogenizer.
